The Illustrated Companion to the Latin Dictionary, and Greek Lexicon (Anthony Rich)

Published in 1849, and comprising 800 pages, this is a fabulous source of information: detailed explanations, comparisons between objects, illustrations and, crucially, clear references to the Roman authors who talked about them.

Long before the days when we can find the “answer” - and often wrong - at the touch of a button, this is a monumental work and testimony to the dedication of the author, and others like him, who spent vast amounts of time engaging in careful research.
The original text is perfectly clear; I have just enhanced it a little for this post, and, yes, I did do that at the touch of a button 🙂
