10.04.24: more detailed dates

There can be variations to these constructions in terms of word order and inclusion or omission of certain words, but the meaning is always clear.

[i] The ablative is used to express on a day.

[ii] The genitive is used to express ‘of’ + the name of the month

diē ¦ Iūniī [genitive] ¦ vīcēnsimō sextō [ablative]

on the 26th day ¦ of June

trīcēnsimō prīmō [ablative] ¦ Decembris [genitive]

on the 31st [‘day’ understood but not expressed] ¦ of December

mēnsis, -is [3/m]: month often occurs in the genitive together with the name of the month which agrees in case with mēnsis.

diē quīntō [ablatīve] ¦ mēnsis [genitive] ¦ Iānuāriī [genitive]

on the 5th day ¦ of the month ¦ of January

The day of the week may also be included

diē [ablative] Lūnae ¦ vīgēsimō nōnō [ablative] ¦ Februāriī [genitive]

on Monday ¦ the 29th ¦ of February

diē may be repeated, once to refer to the day, and once to refer to the month:

diē Lūnae ¦ diē quārtō decimō ¦ Septembris

on Monday ¦ the 14th day ¦ of September

diē Sāturnī ¦ diē XVI ¦ Iūliī

on Saturday ¦ the 16th day ¦ of July

Can you match the Latin dates with the English ones? Don’t be concerned about the case endings; focus on the key information i.e. [i] names of the days of the week [ii] names of the months and [iii] ordinal numbers. Look at number 4:
